Sober Companion for Travel and Events
A work trip, wedding, holiday, or family gathering can call for a specific support plan. Define the itinerary, the person’s preferences, and the companion’s role before treating accompaniment as the answer.
Plan around the actual situation
Discuss the purpose of the trip, travel dates, broad destination, schedule, and the parts of the event where support would be useful. Include the person receiving support in the conversation.
A proposed Recovery & Wellness Guide assignment might involve agreed accompaniment, planning the day, and discussing practical choices around participation. It cannot guarantee abstinence or remove every difficult situation.
Make a plan for choices and changes
Agree on how the person can ask for a break, change activities, or leave an event. Clarify who decides and pays for an altered itinerary. A companion should not be assumed to have authority to restrict an adult’s movement.
- Which journeys, activities, and event hours are included?
- What is the plan for time outside the agreed coverage?
- Who knows the Guide’s role, and what introduction is comfortable and accurate?
- What private space, rest periods, and lodging are needed?
- Who approves extra time, changed flights, or additional nights?
Separate the trip from treatment decisions
A companion does not determine medical readiness to travel, change medication, provide detoxification, or replace psychiatric care. Discuss relevant clinical travel questions with the treating professionals before departure.
For a treatment transfer or a single journey with a receiving handoff, see sober transport. An event assignment may involve several activities and coverage periods beyond transport.
Travel expenses deserve their own agreement
Compare professional time, travel days, transport, event admission if needed, lodging, meals, and change costs. Clarify reimbursement and advance approval rather than treating a daily fee as an all-in budget.
Read the cost guide and hiring questions. The proposed person’s relevant experience and the assignment terms both matter.
Inquire early enough to confirm the details
Use the deployment form for broad timing and location. Avoid sending passport details, personal itineraries, or sensitive health information through the initial form.
A request for a national trip does not confirm local staffing, travel eligibility, or availability. International requests require separate consideration of destination requirements and scope; do not assume coverage in every country.
Frequently asked questions
Can a companion attend a wedding or work trip?
You can inquire about a defined event or travel assignment. Fit, consent, personnel, schedule, expenses, and availability need confirmation.
Will travel support guarantee that someone stays sober?
No. Accompaniment can provide agreed practical support, but no provider can guarantee another person’s behavior or recovery.
Is event support the same as transport?
No. Transport concerns a defined journey and handoff. Event support may include separate activities and agreed on-duty periods.
