Protect connection without protecting addiction

Boundaries and Enabling

Compassion does not mean permissiveness. Healthy boundaries describe what the family will do with its own access, resources, home, money, communication, and participation.

A boundary is not a threat

A credible boundary is specific, lawful, safe, within the speaker’s control, and paired with a responsible path toward help. It does not require abandonment or manufactured suffering.

Comfort can change without love disappearing

Removing unrestricted money, housing, vehicles, concealment, or repeated rescue may remove comforts addiction has used. The spirit matters: protect health and responsibility, remain curious, and keep a clear path to appropriate help.

Common questions

Is a consequence always punishment?

No. Families should not manufacture suffering, but they can stop shielding a person from natural consequences or providing family-controlled resources without responsible conditions.

Does saying no mean cutting off contact?

No. Money, housing, access, and communication are separate decisions. Connection can remain while a particular form of support changes.
